Henri Matisse, born December 31, 1869 in Cateau-Cambrésis and died November 3, 1954 in Nice, was a French painter, designer, engraver and sculptor.
A major figure of the 20th century, his influence on the art of the second half of this century is considerable through the use of simplification, stylization, synthesis and color as the sole subject of painting, both for the many figurative and abstract painters who will claim him and his discoveries as their inspiration. He was the leader of Fauvism.
